The flag of El Salvador was officially adopted on May 17, 1912. The flag consists of three equal horizontal bands of blue (top), white (middle), and blue (bottom) with the national coat of arms centered in the white band. The blue color represents the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea that border the country. The white color represents peace, justice, and equality. The coat of arms features five volcanoes, each with its smoke and steam rising; a cobalt blue and white striped triangular shield displaying a golden sun with 14 rays is in front of the volcanoes. The blue ribbons signify the ocean and sky, while the 14 rays represent the 14 departments of El Salvador. The flag is an important symbol of national identity and pride for the country.
